Description
Joe Valachi Autograph Letter Signed "I am your Daddy/Joseph Joe. O.K." and, at top, "Mr. Joseph Valachi," one page, 8" x 12.5" yellow lined paper. Washington, D.C., August 13, 1965. To his daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" Ball, Indianapolis, with original 2.5" x 4" envelope addressed by Valachi (torn on verso). In part, "I'm very happy for you and your husband, wish you both live a hundred years, it's OK if your husband writes to me, I'll appreciate it, after all he is my Son in Law...I'll be moving in the other room as soon as it gets cold...I think I'll be here for a good while yet, I'm glad, don't worry if the book is published I'll send you one, the government is very slow, you are giving me comfort just by writting to me you are doing more than your share...sometimes you make a tear come out of my eyes...my legs bother me a day before it rains, but I got the pills so I load up with them and I lay in bed after my exercise and I watch TV..." His address at the D.C. jail ("200 19th St. S.E., Washington, D.C.") has been written by Valachi on the letter and the envelope. A member of Lucky Luciano's mob family, Joe Valachi was serving a 15-year sentence for narcotics violations when, in 1963, he testified before the Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee and disclosed the inner workings of the crime organization he identified as the Cosa Nostra. He was the first Mafia figure to break the code of silence as he identified the leaders of the five "families" of organized crime: Vito Genovese, Carlo Gambino, Joseph Magliocco, Joseph Bonanno, and Thomas Luchese, and helped identify over 300 Mafia members.
