Description

Autograph Legal Document Signed "John Doe" and "Richard Roe". One page, 8" x 12.75", Cumberland County, January, 1852. A landlord and tenant dispute titled "January Term 1852". The Oxford English Dictionary states that John Doe is "the name given to the fictitious lessee of the plaintiff, in the (now obsolete in the UK) mixed action of ejectment, the fictitious defendant being called Richard Roe". This particular use became obsolete in the UK in 1852. The document is toned, more so on the folds, with a few chips along the edges and splits in the folds, else good condition.
