Description
A Signed Copy of Einstein's Book on Relativity
Albert Einstein. Relativity: The Special and General Theory. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1920. 8vo, 168 pages. Blue cloth over boards with titles in gilt. The renowned physicist has signed "Albert Einstein" on the front free endpaper. The book is countersigned by Dr. Clyde Fisher (1878-1949), the first director of the Hayden Planetarium located at New York's American Museum of Natural History, who places the following inscription: "Autographed on a visit with Professor Einstein, June 11, 1938, at 112 Mercer St., Princeton, New Jersey. - C.F." It is believed that Fisher first met Einstein sometime in the mid-1920s when the former was visiting the Carl Zeiss Optical Works in Germany.Of particular interest is the existence of several candid photographs (five in all) of Einstein affixed to the pages throughout. On the front pastedown is a fantastic 4.75" x 3.75", silver gelatin photograph of Einstein, below which is written: "Einstein / Photograph by Clyde Fisher, June 11, 1938." On the verso of the page bearing the signatures of Einstein and Fisher is attached a second photograph, measuring 5" x 3.25", this time of both men, the inscription below placing the time and date of the photo at "Princeton, N.J., June 14, 1941." At the rear is a similar photograph, but both men are grinning. On the blank page before page number one is a 3.5" x 4.75", silver print of Einstein in a tuxedo, taken by Fisher on April 1, 1934.
Also included is a ticket to a concert performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City on April 1, 1934, and an invitation to meet him "after the Concert."
