Description

[HMS Titanic]. Account of Wages for Edneser Edward Wheelton. One partly-printed page, 7.5" x 9.5", "Port of So'ton [Southampton, England]," May 13, 1912. Edneser Wheelton was twenty-nine years old when he joined the HMS Titanic crew as a first class steward in early April 1912. Wheelton worked as a saloon steward with the Victualling Crew. The Titanic's late-night collision with an iceberg woke him. After helping passengers load into lifeboats, he boarded lifeboat No. 11 and survived. Stamped under "Date and Port of Engagement" is "10 Apr 1912 / So'ton." "15 Apr 1912" is stamped under "Date of Discharge." According to the document, Wheelton was paid "£3.15" for six days work. He was entitled to a bonus, which brought the total due him to £4. Under "Name of Master" is written "E[dward]. J. Smith." Toned with smoothed folds.
