Description
"Buffalo Bill Cody": A Great Handwritten 1911 Letter to his Partner Pawnee Bill, Signed "W. F. Cody." "Major" was Cody's common salutation for Pawnee Bill. Their intention would be to meet in New York in January to begin making the business and tour arrangements for the show. By that time, he says, "my ore will be here and will be tested by the Edison people at Orange, New Jersey." Cody is indulging in a lot of wishful thinking here, hoping to be able to pay his part of the start-up costs rather than having to borrow again from Lillie. He had begun sinking big money into mines at Oracle, Arizona, near Tucson, in 1909. The principle product was Scheelite, an ore from which tungsten is extracted. The Edison Company actually did put some money in, but not much. Cody's stock never did come "up to par." But he spent enough time (and about half a million dollars) in and around Oracle and Tucson that he was suggested (only partly tongue in cheek) as a straight-shooting candidate to be one of Arizona's first two U.S. senators in 1912.As for lecturing, Cody was a pretty fair public speaker, but he did not get signed by one of the lecture bureaus (whose time, really, was past), but he did get a lucrative contract from Hearst to produce a serialized autobiographical history of the West entitled "The West that Was."
The letter fills both sides, 8" x 10", and is in excellent condition.
