Description

Bishop Pedro Agustín Estévez y Ugarte Signed Indulgence. One page, 8.5" x 12"; Mérida, Yucatán; November 23, 1803. Partly printed document, an indulgence granted to Fra. Antonio de Medina. Indulgences were granted to Catholic communicants in exchange for acts of repentance and/or donations used to build a church or perform charitable works. Ugarte was appointed Bishop of Yucatan by Charles IV. He arrived in Campeche in 1802. When Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, he continued his work remaining free of politics. He was the founder of the University of Yucatán, which was established in 1824.

Condition: Mounted; framed to an overall size of 12" x 15.5". Light soiling, and a pencil notation at bottom listing date of document in English.
