Benjamin Harrison was twenty-eight years old when he enlisted in the Union Army as a captain (he was promoted to colonel less than two weeks later) in the 70th Indiana Infantry in the summer of 1862. He joined Sherman two years later and participated in the Atlanta Campaign before being sent northeast to take part in the Battle of Nashville. In January 1865, President Lincoln gave him a brevet commission to brigadier general. He mustered out of the army in June 1865.

Condition: Minute scattered soiling. Verso with paper abrasion and ink notations.
