Description
Benjamin Franklin Document Signed as Governor of Pennsylvania. One page, 15.5" x 12.5", on vellum, Pennsylvania, July 13, 1787, signed on the left as president of The Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Regarding "Two pounds eleven Shillings and nine pence...into the Receiver General's Office" for "a Certain Tract of Land, called 'Beginning.'" Blind embossed State of Pennsylvania paper seal in the top left corner. Franklin signs along the left margin "B. Franklin."In July of 1787, Franklin was serving out the end of his term as Governor of Pennsylvania and was attending the Constitutional Convention as a delegate from Pennsylvania. Franklin was instrumental in getting overall support for the Constitution. The large states disliked the Connecticut Compromise, believing that it gave too much power to the smallest states. Franklin's suggestion was that each state got one vote and multiple senators, and suggested that all revenue bills originate in the House. He also served as a mediator when arguments got heated amongst delegates. In the end, while not completely in agreement with all of its parts, he set his distinctive signature to one of the United State's most treasured documents.
Soiling along the left margin, but signature remains clear and bold. Uneven toning along the folds.
