An early George Washington document related to surveying with a rare full signature in the text
Autograph Document Signed "George Washington" in body of the text. One page, 6.5" x 4", inlaid to 7.75" x 10.5". Circa 1773. Neatly titled beneath document "Original Document (Inlaid) all in the handwriting / of / George Washington." Mended with tape on verso at mid-horizontal fold and silked.In full, "I do hereby certifie that I lay no claim to a Tract of Land Surveyed in my name in the Barrens of Bullskin; adjoining the Lines of Grub, Alexander and others, and containing by a Survey made by Mr George Washington for 445 Ac[re]s and that, it is not my Intention to oppose the Issuing of a Patent to the Heirs of Maj[o]r Law[renc]e Washington dec[ease]d for whose use & Benefit the said Land was Surveyed."
In 1751, 19-year-old George Washington surveyed a tract of land containing 445 acres for Richard Seymour who, 22 years later, does not intend to oppose the Issuing of a Patent to the Heirs of the George's late stepbrother, Major Lawrence Washington, "for whose use & Benefit the said Land was Surveyed." Seymour asked George Washington to write this certification for his signature.
This was written by Washington for Richard Sanford. On February 4, 1773, George Washington wrote Lord Fairfax that this tract was surveyed for Lawrence Washington in the name of Richard Sanford. From George Washington's Field Book: "25 March 1751. For Richard Sanford. 445 acres between the South Fork of Bullskin Run and Long Marsh Run. Granted to Charles Washington, 20 October 1774." Charles Washington (1738-1799) was George's youngest brother. When Lawrence Washington (1718-1752) died, he left his estate, Mount Vernon, to his widow Anne Fairfax Washington. When she died in 1761, his half-brother George Washington inherited the estate
