Description

William Butler Yeats Handwritten Poem Signed. One page, 5.12" x 7" (sight), no place; no date. Yeats writes out his poem "A Song of the Rosy-Cross," titled here as "A Rosicruxian Rhyme." He writes, in full: He who measures gain and loss / when he gave to thee the rose / gave to me alone, the cross: / where the blood-red blossom blows / in a wood of dew and moon / there thy wandering pathway goes / mine where waters brood and toss, / Yet have I one joy hid close, / He who measures gain and loss / when he gave to thee the rose / gave to me alone, the cross." Signed, "WB Yeats."

The poem here is a nearly identical version of Yeats' poem, "A Song of the Rosy-Cross." However, in addition to the different title, Yeats has rearranged one line of the poem. Whereas the published version reads, "Yet one joy have I hid close," the version here moves the verb clause to the front. Rosicrucianism, referenced in the hand-written title, was a spiritual and cultural movement that arose within learned communities in early seventeenth-century Europe. A series of anonymous manifestos circulated throughout scholars' circles claiming that followers would be able to remake the world through alchemy and cryptic lessons from the past. Yeats incorporated themes surrounding roses and spiritualism into a number of poems, particularly those published at the end of the nineteenth century.

Condition: Creased along folds. Minor staining and toning at the left margin. Pencil notations at the upper left corner and top margin. Closed tear at center, affecting text and a few small holes, not affecting text. The frame is slightly scuffed. Not examined outside of the frame.
