Description

Karel Capek Signed Copy of Letters from England. London: Geoffrey Bles, no date. Later edition, originally published in English in 1925. 8vo. [8], 9-192. Original purple cloth, upper cover ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Inscribed by the author on the half-title: "To Mr L. V. Harrison / from / Karel Capek / 22. / VIII. 30."

Although best known today for his science fiction, Capek enjoyed widespread acclaim during his lifetime for his travel writing. Between 1923 and 1936, he published the Letters from series, a collection of essays recounting his journeys through Italy, England, Spain, Holland, and "the North." The second installment, Letters from England, was an immediate success with English readers and was reprinted numerous times between 1925 and 1943.

Condition: Spine sunned to an even brown, light discoloration and minor wear to edges of covers; gilding faded; endpapers lightly toned with some foxing.
