Description
Jonathan Swift Autograph Letter Signed "Jonath Swift". One page of a bifolium, Deanery-house, Dublin; April 20, 1732. Addressed to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lionel Sackville, Duke of Dorset. It reads, in full: "My Lord. I return my most humble acknowledgements to your Grace and my Lady Dutchess [sic] for your great condescention [sic] in inquiring after me at a time when you are so much taken up in crowds and ceremony. I can make no wishes for either of you, but a good voyage without sickness or accidents. For as to honor fortune, favor, and the like, I can only pray for the continuance of them. That I so seldom troubled your Grace, I am sure you will approve, as a matter of conscience in me, not to disturb your house, which in the business of some months left so few for your own leisure and diversions."At the time the letter was written, the elderly Swift was Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. Swift and the Duke had numerous correspondences over the years, and Swift once remarked that the Duke was "one of the most agreeable and well- informed men, and best conversationalists, he had ever met." A popular satirist and essayist, Swift is probably best known as the author of Gulliver's Travels (1726).
Condition: Flattened folds, with soiling at the folds and on verso. Separations at the folds have been repaired with material on verso (internal pages 2 and 3). Light toning throughout.
