Description
Rowling Thanks the Mother of her Ex-Boyfriend for her Kind Words About Harry Potter
J.K. Rowling Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8 ¼ x 1 ¾
inches, Edinburgh; December 14, 1998. Letter addressed to Brenda,
the mother of her former boyfriend, Mike, thanking her for her kind
words about Harry Potter.Rowling writes:
"This is a long overdue reply to your letter about Harry, which meant a great deal to me. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to write & for all the kind things you said about the books. Mike tells me he's bought a copy of the first one ('as you're obviously not going to send me one') but, not altogether to my surprise, he hasn't read it. I'm thinking of pretending there's a character based on him in the next one, just to fool him into ploughing through it. I trust I can count on your support in this matter.
Jessica & I are staying in Edinburgh this Christmas, but friends are coming to stay too. I'm really looking forward to it, it's been a very hectic time of late. I hear you're off to France; give Pam, Jacques & Nicolas my love & tell them Harry Potter et 'Ecole de Sorciers is very reasonably priced (but perhaps still a little old for Nicolas?)
It was lovely to hear from you and I hope all goes well in Wales. If I'm down that way next year (not impossible, because I'm touring, you see), perhaps we could 'do' lunch?
Anyway, hope '99 is a good one for all of you and thanks again for getting in touch.
Lots of love / Jo."
Rowling writes to the mother of her former boyfriend whom she was dating when she first came up with the concept of Harry Potter. Although Rowling and Mike ended their relationship in 1991, she remained close to him and his family, as evidenced here. It is well known that Rowling first came up with the idea of Harry Potter on a train ride back from visiting Mike in Manchester. Likewise, she came up with the idea of Quidditch after a fight with Mike.
In 1998, J.K. Rowling achieved remarkable success with the release of the third book in the Harry Potter series, titled Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. By this time, the books had already gained a substantial following, and the anticipation for each new installment was unprecedented. Prisoner of Azkaban became a bestseller, solidifying Rowling's status as a literary phenomenon. Only months after writing this letter, Warner Bros. purchased the rights to produce a film adaptation of the Harry Potter series.
Condition: Very lightly toned and creased along folds. Otherwise fine.
