Description

James Russell Lowell Autograph Letter Signed, "J. R. L.". Four integral pages, written on page one, 4.5" x 7", February 9, 1888, Cambridge, on embossed notepaper. The letter is addressed to "My dear Curtis", most likely fellow author George William Curtis, who eulogized Lowell upon his death. Fine.

In the letter Lowell writes, "I wrote 'Without & Within' & Briggs left off the last stanza & printed it. When are you going to send us something?"

James Russell Lowell, an American romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat, associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. The person mentioned in the letter was Charles F. Briggs, author and publishing partner of Edgar Allen Poe.
