Description

Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 8", London; February 2, 1871. The letter is written in French and addressed to his friend, French socialite Valentine Delessert. It was written while Turgenev was working on his semi-autobiographical novel, Torrents of Spring. It reads in part [English Translation]: "I am writing to you while I can. I do not have to tell you how often and with what sorrowful interest I have thought of you. Grant me a couple words in response - about you, about your family. I am about to depart for Russia. But your note would still find me here. I will come to Paris at the end of April. I hope that by that time we will have peace and we will be able to speak of these terrible 'tempi passati' [times passed]. You will probably have many letters to write - but I only ask for two words. In the meantime, I kiss your hands tenderly, and ask you to trust in my unwavering affection." Signed, "Iv. Turgenev."

Condition: Smoothed folds. Pencil notation to recto. Slightly uneven left edge.
