Hemingway letter to "Bra" Saunders
Ernest Hemingway Autograph Letter Signed "Ernest Hemingway". Two pages, 8.5" x 12.5", Madrid, Spain; June 29, [1931]. A letter addressed to Captain Eddie "Bra" Saunders, relaying details of his time spent in Madrid, where Hemingway frequently visited. Hemingway was quite enamored with the Spanish city, and brags to his friend about the cheapness of wine and the entertainment of bullfights. He writes: "We are all well and hope you and your wife and Annie are the same. Things are very interesting here now also everything very cheap. Good wine. Only 7 cents a quart. The kind Peña sells for 3.00 a bottle costs 25¢ here. It has been very hot but I have been working hard. Lately it has been too hot to do anything but drink beer in the shade and eat shrimps. Plenty of bull fights but they haven't been very good. I will send you the money in September so count on it. Look - I wonder if you would grease that outboard engine of mine all over and oil it around plugs so it wont rust? Charles will know where it is. Hope you have had good luck if you went sponging. I won a little money at the cockfights in Havana and playing poker and dice on the boat. Didn't get seasick any on the trip. Took 12 days from Havana to Vigo - pretty rough the last 6. Met Pauline at the French Spanish border - went up to Paris to see Bumby. They are all in fine shape. There is no chance of the King coming back here but they have plenty of trouble of their own on their hands. I certainly wish you were here so we could go to the bull fight this afternoon, and show you around afterwards. Give my very best to your wife Julia and to Annie and best luck to you always. Tell Charles the reason I haven't written is because have been working so bloody hard."Captain Eddie Saunders was a boat captain and close friend of Hemingway. The two men, joined by Charles Thompson and "Sloppy Joe" Russell, would go on fishing trips together in Key West. Hemingway's 1933 short story, "After the Storm", was based on a tale that Saunders had shared with him. Hemingway later spent time in Madrid as a war correspondent and covered the Spanish Civil War. It was these experiences that he used as inspiration for his book For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Condition: Flattened mail folds, and lightly toned throughout, else very good.
