Description

A Fine Signed Portrait of Dickens Executed the Year Before the Author's Death

Charles Dickens Signed Lithograph Portrait. 10.125 x 13.5 inches (sight size). No place; 1869. Boldly signed, "Charles Dickens", in the lower margin on the original mat. A fine lithographic portrait, after E. Goodwyn Lewis, heightened by hand in pastel or chalk. Double-matted and handsomely framed.

Edward Goodwyn Lewis (1827-1891) was a recognized portrait artist, best known for his portraits of prominent Victorians, as well as Biblical and Shakespearean subjects, with works in many collections including the British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery and The Folger Shakespeare Library. This finely-rendered portrait depicting the author was executed the year before his death. Apparently, Dickens prepared and signed these special prints on the mount for distribution to a select number of recipients.

Condition: Lightly toned, slight breaks along right edge of print where affixed to original mat, somewhat uneven toning to original mat with a few stray spots; old tape reinforcements on verso along the print margins where mounted to mat, with some discoloration.
