Description
Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages (recto only), 5" x 6.25", n.p. [London], n.d. [circa November 1855]. Writing to his publisher, Bradbury and Evans, he states that he will "write to Mr. Weber by this post, letting him know that you will forward him a Proof of No. 1 in great privacy and confidence by tomorrow's post (if you have not already done so). . . . You will, of course, keep me well informed as to the Go of No. 1." The proof to which he refers is probably Little Dorrit, a serialized novel whose first installment was published in December 1855.He continues by observing that there are "many French people here, and am not surprised to find a general impression (not to be concealed by any politeness) that England has become a mere second-rate power and is perfectly unable to do anything for herself - a result of toadyism and misgovernment." Moderately toned along the edges. The upper edge of the first page has been torn slightly, but not affecting the text.
