Description
Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4.5" x 7.25" (sight), New York, February 5, 1842. Writing to American portrait painter Francis Alexander, Dickens informs him that his "beautiful and welcome present arrived safely today. I will hang it in my own room at home." Alexander had recently painted a portrait of the young author sitting at a table writing with a quilled pen.Dickens was a believer in the Total Abstinence Principle from his novel A Christmas Carol (which had nothing to do with alcohol or other vices, but restraint from anger and meanness) answers a question to that effect saying, "Yes, I have kept the Total abstinence Pledge. And I mean to keep it unbroken to the last."
Letter is toned at the edges from being matted, but the text is bright and beautifully written. Dickens' distinctive signature features his usual elaborate paraph. Matted with a portrait of the author to an overall size of 13.75" x 10.75".
