Description
Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 4.5" x 7", on his personal letterhead. Baltimore, February 11, 1868. In February 1868, Dickens was on the tail end of his second and final reading tour of the United States. Writing home to his son, "Harry," Dickens, a lifelong cricket fan, gives the young man advice on directing the Higham cricket club in his absence. He says, in part: "In reference to the cricket club's not being what it might be, I agree with you in the main. There are some things to be considered, however...The first thing to be avoided, is, the slightest appearance of patronage (one of the curses of England). The second thing to be avoided, is, the deprival of the men of their just right to manage their own affairs. I would rather have no club at all, than have either of these great mistakes made."To rectify the situation, he proposes that young Harry do the following: "The way out of them is this: Call the men together, and explain to them that the club might be larger, richer, and better. Say that you think that more of the neighbouring gentlemen could be got to be playing members. That you submit to them that it would be better to have a captain who could correspond with them, and talk to them, and in some sort manage them; and...having long played it at a great public school, you propose yourself as captain, for the foregoing reasons...Say that you have consulted me upon the matter, and that I am of these opinions, and am ready to become chairman of the club..."
Folds are weak and separating slightly at the edges; separation at the intersection of the folds has resulted in some loss of paper, but does not affect the text. Moderately toned along the edges.
