[Samuel Clemens] John Clemens Autograph Promissory Note Signed "John M. Clemens". One page, 8" x 4", January 29, 1844, n.p., accompanied by a list of groceries, one page, 6.25" x 15.75". Both are toned and near fine.

More Information:

John Clemens (1798-1847), the father of the great American author Samuel Clemens, was a country merchant. Both of these documents likely concerned his business. In the promissory note, Clemens promises to pay "Henry W. Collins on order two hundred & ninety dollars & fifty-five cents with interest thereon." The grocery list contains thirty-three entries of necessities such as flour, sugar & coffee, Bacon, and caster oil with prices. Young Samuel Clemens was only nine years old at the time.
