Description
[Reconstruction]. William Lloyd Garrison Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 5" x 8", Roxbury [Massachusetts], August 20, 1872, to Reverend W. T. Briggs. Garrison discusses his voting preferences-Republican-for the newly enfranchised freedmen, which conflicted with Senator Charles Sumner, a "bad advisor" to the "colored voters of the country." Lightly toned.More Information:
Garrison informs his reader that he felt that he "owed it to them [the newly enfranchised black voters] to confront him [Sumner] as a bad advisor at this crisis, and to warn them not to accept his conclusions on the ground of the eminent service he has rendered their cause since he espoused it. Their response has been most hearty. . . . [They] will register their votes in favor of the Republican administration and its candidate, almost to a man." He ends by reminding his reader of the previous struggles of the freedmen and how their "physical aid was essential, on the battle-field, to the suppression of the rebellion."
