Description

Thomas Eakins Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 5.12" x 8", Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania]; February 1, 1901. The famed painter, photographer, and sculptor writes to L.W. Miller providing him with old compositions to assist with the latter's drawing skills. Eakins writes, "Thinking it might be of interest to young composers to see all the working drawings for a picture, I send you those of one of my compositions now on exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, a portrait of Mrs. Frishmuth who gave to the University of Pennsylvania (archaeological department) its superb collection of musical instruments." Signed, "Yours truly, Thomas Eakins."

Eakins maintained a controversial reputation throughout his career. An alumnus and educator at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Eakins built the program into one of the leading art schools in late nineteenth-century America. However, a lecture on nude portraiture in which the painter removed the loincloth of a male model in front of female students forced Eakins to resign from the Academy in 1886, severely tarnishing his reputation. From 1887 onwards, he focused primarily on portraiture and relied on friends and acquaintances to act as models. Notable portraits include those of James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Walt Whitman. Although he received little recognition during his lifetime, American art historians celebrate Eakins as one of the most important realist painters in American history.
