Description
A Frail Renoir Writes that He is in a Period of Uncertainty and Includes a Drawing of a Woman
Pierre-Auguste Renoir Autograph Letter Signed with Drawing.
Single sheet, 8 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches; Nice; December 4, 1914.A quickly scripted letter in French to an unknown recipient: "Excuse me for not writing to you, but I was in an [period of] uncertainty which prevented me from doing so. I think I'm going to survive. I won't tell you anymore [but] I will not keep your news from you. Best to you / Renoir."
He adds a brief postscript, signed with his initial: "It's been raining every day at 2 o'clock. R."
Renoir began experiencing health issues due to rheumatoid arthritis in the early 1900s. As the condition worsened, impacting his mobility and ability to make art, he moved to Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Nice, in hopes that the mild climate would be gentler on his health. It is from there that he writes this letter.
Despite his health challenges, Renoir continued to paint. The period around 1914 yielded numerous significant works including The Judgment of Paris (1915) and The Bathers (1918-1919), both works focusing on the human figure and revisiting classical themes. The drawing featured on this letter is a quick sketch of a woman, using line to capture her form.
A pencil annotation at the lower left corner made by a previous collector in French reads: "Letter from the Rouard family / Renoir already paralyzed." Accompanied by a letter of authenticity issued by PSA/DNA.
Condition: Flattened folds, light even toning, a single ink brushstroke below the drawing, pencil annotation at bottom left corner. Two hole punches along bottom margin are torn at the base. Adhesive remnants along the top margin on verso, and a pencil notation at the bottom right corner.
