Description

A Complete Set of Four Art Prints from Where the Wild Things Are, Each Signed by Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak. Where the Wild Things Are (Four Signed Prints). 1971.

Complete set of four art prints, each printed in 1971 from the original drawings for this classic and influential picture book which won the ALA 1964 Caldecott Medal. Each print on a single sheet, measuring approximately 15 x 24 inches, and signed by Maurice Sendak at lower right. In the published book version, each of these images is printed as double-page illustrations, but here the images are printed on a single sheet. Fine condition.

The four prints include: "Swinging from the Trees," "Wild Things Howling," "King of the Wild Things," and "The Morning After." This series of prints was published so that collectors, friends, and family of the artist could frame individual pictures without mutilating their books. All of the prints were issued unsigned. While the number of prints issued is unknown (but believed to be less than a few thousand), apparently the number of prints signed by Sendak was very small. Over the years a small number of copies of single prints were signed by the artist for friends or for concessionary sale, but it is uncommon to find a signed set of all four "Wild Thing" images.
