Description

"The Jolly Tar and the Milkmaid"

George Gershwin Autograph Musical Manuscript Signed. Four pages of a bifolium of music paper, 10.5" x 13.5"; undated but circa 1937. Fifty-seven bars of music (in pencil) from "The Jolly Tar and the Milkmaid", possibly a working draft. The faux madrigal was featured in the 1937 film, A Damsel in Distress, and was performed by Fred Astaire and a group of madrigal singers. George Gershwin has signed at top right and has signed for Ira at top left. George Gershwin died while the film was still in production from a brain tumor; he was only 38 years old.

This manuscript was presented by Ira Gershwin to Louis Alter shortly after George's death. Alter was a songwriter and composer, and had a long relationship with both Gershwin brothers. This is the first time the manuscript is offered at auction, and it is coming directly from Alter's estate. The music paper is imprinted with the RKO Studios name at bottom.

Gershwin manuscripts are exceptionally scarce and desirable. The last such manuscript we have handled was a single page containing thirteen bars of music from "Second Rhapsody", which sold for $46,875 in 2014.

Condition: Moderately toned, small spot of dampstaining along bottom margin at very edge, else fine.
