Description

George Gershwin Autograph Musical Manuscript Signed. One page, 9.5" x 12.25", circa 1931. Along the upper edge, the great American composer has written: "From sketch book of 2nd Rhapsody. George Gershwin." The sheet contains thirteen bars of music from Second Rhapsody, and is likely a working draft. Edges are gently toned; with negligible chipping along the lower edge.

Gershwin began writing Second Rhapsody with his brother and writing partner, Ira, while working on music for a montage in the film Delirious. He finished the sketch, originally titled Rhapsody in Rivets, in February 1931 and, after returning to New York, completed the full score. Gershwin himself said of the piece, "In many respects, such as orchestration and form, it is the best thing I have ever written."
