Description

Frida Kahlo Autograph Note (Unsigned) with Drawing. One envelope, 6.25" x 3.5", Coyoacán, Mexico; October 31, 1947. Handwritten note by Kahlo on the back on an envelope with "Antoni Slonimski / poeta / PEN CLUB" followed by a note that reads, "Que no se te olvide la lista que le prometiste a la ministra. [Don't forget the list that you promised the minister.]" This note was left by Kahlo for her husband, Diego Rivera. There is an eye drawn at the left margin with an arrow pointing to the note, likely as a visual play on the Spanish phrase "ojo [eye]" often used colloquially as "pay attention" or "watch out." Antoni Slonimski was a Polish poet whose works focused on social justice. Though the connection between Kahlo and Slonimski is not stated, both artists were staunchly opposed to Joseph Stalin and actively protested the Soviet regime.

Condition: Lightly toned with minor staining at the lower right corner. Irregular right margin. Minor offsetting.

Provenance: Gift from Ruth Rivera Marín (daughter of Diego Rivera) to Berta Taracena, and by inheritance to our consignor.
