Description

Frida Kahlo Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.75" x 7.75", no place; June 17, 1945. Letter to Kahlo's stepdaughter Ruth Rivera Marín, addressed affectionately as "Ruti linda [Ruti darling]." Translated into English, the letter reads, "I send to you some tiny gold earrings for your pretty little ears. Each time you wear them, remember that in the distant Coyoacanes, there is someone who loves you very much, for three reasons: first, for being yourself, second, for being the daughter of Don Pelelico, and third, for being so pretty. It's not your fault and neither mine for loving you so much." Signed, "Your Frida."

The daughter of famous muralist, Diego Rivera, and actress, Guadalupe Marín Preciado, Ruth Rivera Marín grew up amongst the colorful artists of the Mexican mural movement of the 1930s and 1940s. Rivera Marín was only two years old when her father married Frida Kahlo in 1929 and witnessed the entirety of their intense, and often dysfunctional, relationship that lasted until Kahlo's death in 1954. Drawn to her father's artistic world, Rivera Marín pursued an architecture degree at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) in Mexico City. She made history by becoming the first woman admitted to the IPN's College of Engineering and Architecture. After completing her degree, Rivera Marín remained close to her father, collaborating with him as well as artists and architects such as Juan O'Gorman and Pedro Ramírez Vazquez. She planned several major buildings in Mexico's capital city, including the National Medical Center, the Museum of Modern Art Chapultepec, and the Anahuacalli Museum. From 1959 to her death in 1969, Rivera Marín was the head of the Architecture Department at the prestigious Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts).

In this letter here, Kahlo sends a gift to Rivera Marín while she was a student IPN. At the time, Kahlo was living at Casa Azul in Coyoacán, on the outskirts of Mexico City. By 1947, Kahlo's health had declined to the point that the artist could not sit or stand for long periods of time. Because of this, she was largely confined to her home, unable to travel to loved ones like Rivera Marín without intense effort.

Condition: Letter creased along folds with stains at the right margin and left center, affecting text.

Provenance: Gift from Ruth Rivera Marín to Berta Taracena, and by inheritance to our consignor.
