Description

Claude Monet Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages of a bifolium on Savoy Hotel letterhead, 4.5" x 7", London; "Tuesday evening." A letter to his wife describing his recent work in London. Monet writes, in part, "you do not have the fog that so often obstructs the sun. Unfortunately, as the barometer is falling in Giverny and it seems that it will not last, I would be desperate for my poor paintings, which are beginning to worry me, and I am wondering if I will not have to come back next year. It is the weather between now and the end of the month that will decide, for I am doing my utmost and I am beginning to get tired of this continual work without a day's rest." Signed, "Claude."

The founder of the impressionist style, Monet spent his career largely painting his renowned landscapes. The young artist was originally inspired by the work of Camille Pissarro and Edouard Manet. In 1874, Monet debuted Impression, Sunrise to dubious critics who coined Monet's style "impressionism." Intended to negatively point to the painting's presumably unfinished appearance, the style quickly exploded within the French art scene.

It is likely that Monet wrote this letter between 1899 and 1901, when he made several trips to London from France and painted over sixty canvases of iconic landmarks throughout the city. The majority of the works completed during this time focused on Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament. Although Monet was famously a fervent Anglophile, he particularly enjoyed painting London because of the fog that cloaked the city in soft light.
