Description
Aubrey Beardsley Autograph Letter Signed "AB." One page, 5" x 8", Bournemouth [England], February 5, 1897, to publisher Leonard Smithers in regards to a visit. In full: "So glad you are able to come. Come here of course. I hope you will have a decent day for travelling. Weather mild here. Yours in frantic haste."Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) was an artist and leading figure in the Aesthetic movement, which included writers such as Oscar Wilde and artists like James Whistler. Smithers, a known pornographer, published Beardsley's art as well as the works of other so-called Decadents including Oscar Wilde, Ernest Dowson, and Max Beerbohm. Beardsley, Smithers, and author Arthur Symons started the magazine "The Savoy" which only ran for eight issues in 1896. With original transmittal envelope.
A version of this letter is found in "The Letters of Aubrey Beardsley," but it is incorrect as it is taken from a German translation that was published in 1908. Toned with repair work at the edges.
