Description
Army of the Coast, Camp Kirby Autograph Letter Signed with U.S. Amnesty Oath. The letter is six pages on two bifolium sheets, 5" x 8", Camp Kirby; January 7, 1862. From soldier W.F. Heard. Addressed to a Mrs. J.M. Dyer, his sister, sharing information of his enlistment and experience in the Texas Army. Reads in part:" ...Many! Many! Changes has taken place in the life of your [illegible] Brother since last you saw him. And these many stranger vices etudes of life may have converted the once impetuous youth into a cold hearted man of the world...You will see I am in the army. Yes - wrestling with the [illegible] of the North to preserve unsullied the rights of our own sunny South. Tis the holiest cause known to man, and one I am proud to acknowledge myself engaged in. were I not a soulder [ sic] now at a time when my country is threatened with subjugation...I would loathe myself the shadow of my former self - self respect would ever torture me with the name of Coward...I saw the seven long guns when at Galveston I think if we are not attacked until we can mount them the Yankees had a s well give out the idea of taking this place...I will be in the war as long as there is any enemy on southern soil, or I will only claim four by six feet for a visiting place in order that when the weary traveler passes by he can say there sleeps one who died battling for his country. The above I think is any true Texans choice rather than become subject to Black republican vote. We have no idea however that it is possible for us to be subjugated within the next hundred years..." With the original transmittal envelope. The letter has folds, with separations at the folds. Some tearing and holes at folds, with little effects to the text. Wear and soiling to the transmittal cover.
The letter is accompanied by a United States Amnesty Oath. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", New Braunfels; October 20, 1865. No. 619, signed by former Confederate " Johann Mergenthal." Swearing an oath of allegiance to the United States, promising to uphold the Emancipation of Slavery. Oath has flattened folds, with some separations starting. Toning throughout, and light soiling. Dampstaining throughout. All proceeds to benefit educational programs at The Bryan Museum.
