Description
An Archive of Letters Exchanged Between Salmon P. Chase and Gamaliel Bailey. A total of eleven letters; three from Chase to Bailey, and eight from Bailey to Chase. Letters vary in size and length, a total of thirty six pages, dated from February 23, 1849 to December 30, 1849. Content focuses mainly on the need to establish a daily paper, family news, and news of shared acquaintances. Highlights from Chase's letters as follows:April 24, 1849: "You see I am still the object of most malignant assaults on the part of the Whig press. Stanley published a powerful article in my defense this morning; much too praisy of me, but still very comforting on the whole. Now I want one thing of your friendship. Your paper is read in Ohio more than any one other... Now will you just take Stanley's article and Townshend's speech published in the Era, and any other notices of the Ohio transactions within your reach and devote a column... I am in want of more money than I can conveniently raise. What do you say of lending me say $2000 at 8% for a year..."
May 21, 1849: "Horace Greeley has been here. I went to see him with Mr. Case, the Editor of the Spirit of the Age... We had quite a chat. Horace letting out against Locofocoism & Tom Jefferson, and I modestly fending off... After this I took tea with him... gave him a basin of water to wash himself with as preparation to his lecture, and let him go on his way. He is an odd fish. Philosophical, after his fashion, sympathetical with the masses & progress under guidance however; infirm of purpose..."
October 12, 1849: "The Session is approaching. There are many indications of a disposition to postpone the issue of Freedom or Slavery: and we shall need, sorely need a vigorous daily champion at Washington of the right principles and of right action at Washington next winter. It will be very hard to keep our men in line without it... You will have the results of our Election before this reaches you. I think the Democrats have the balance of power as they had it last winter, though the old line Democrats claim a majority overall..."
Overall condition of all letters is near fine. All are transmitted letters with dockets, and sometimes postmarked address sheets.
