Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8.75" x
11.25", Berlin; May 10, 1928. Letter in German on Einstein's
personalized letterhead addressed to Professor [Morris R.] Cohen in
which Einstein refers to suffering prejudice under the rise of
nationalism and discusses a recent essay by his friend and
colleague, quantum physicist Niels Bohr. It reads, in full [English
translation]:"Mr Wind recently came to see me and brought me the papers, some of which I have already read with great interest. But the best thing about this was that he could tell me about you and what you have been doing, which he did with much warmth and understanding. He also related to me that you have been suffering under nationalism, a situation I know quite well from my own past experience. However, by way of consoling you, I can tell you that this has pretty much come to an end, in that people have the laudable need to engage with new follies from time to time. - I am reminded of you every time I carry your beautiful leather bag filled with music to friends' houses, in order to play music there.
Our physics is currently becoming quite interesting again, by casting doubt on the possibility of enacting the usual sense of causality in space and time. If you are interested in this subject matter, you can delve into it by reading the very beautifully and clearly written essay by Nils Bohr, which appeared recently in 'Naturwissenschaften' and probably also in 'Nature'. However, I must confess that I do not believe in the ultimate character conveyed by this transformation." Signed, "A. Einstein."
Morris R. Cohen (1880-1947) was a Russian-born American philosopher. He taught philosophy at City College of New York from 1912 to 1938 and founded and edited the quarterly Jewish Social Studies with Salo W. Baron. In 1933, he founded the Conference on Jewish Relations to counter Nazi propaganda and the rising threat of fascism. Einstein presided over the conference in 1936. The letter is accompanied by an English translation and an LOA from PSA/DNA.
Condition: Moderate edgewear along right edge with splits along two horizontal folds, crossing just one word of text. Some wrinkling with smoothed folds. Small stains in left margin. Pinholes along top horizontal fold.
