Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Check. Partially printed check, 7.5" x 2.75", Springfield, [Illinois]; February 28, 1859. Drawn on a "Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company" check printed in blue with a framed railroad illustration at left and a Richards & Smith printer's imprint. The check is accomplished in Lincoln's hand for $12.00 to the payee, "R. H. Beach." Boldly signed, "A. Lincoln."

The payee is presumably Richard H. Beach (1808-1883), an early settler of Springfield. He relocated to the town in 1834 and partnered with Edmund R. Wiley to establish its first clothing store. He was also the administrator of Daniel Ruckel's estate. The Personal Finances of Abraham Lincoln records a $12.00 check was made from Lincoln's account on this date.

Reference: Pratt, H., The Personal Finances of Abraham Lincoln, page 167.

Condition: Bank-cut "cross-hatch" cancellation punch and two spindle cancellations punches. Two small pieces of archival tape attachment at upper margin verso, presumably indicating prior mounting. Pencil notation on verso. Minute scattered soiling.
