Description

Aaron Burr Check Signed. One partially printed check, 7.125" x 2.75" (sight), New York; April 18, 1800. A check drawn on the newly formed "Manhattan Company" ordering payment of $55 to "A.B." Boldly signed at lower right, "A. Burr." It has been slabbed and graded GEM MT 10 by PSA/DNA and measures 9.5" x 4.5" overall.

This check dates from the pivotal year of 1800 when Burr and Jefferson received an equal number of votes in the Electoral College (the understanding was that Burr was to be Vice-President), precipitating a crisis that culminated in the adoption of the Eleventh Amendment.

In 1799, the state legislature gave the newly formed Manhattan Company the exclusive right to supply water to New York City. The company, headed by Burr, ignored plans to bring water from outside Manhattan and sunk more wells (at Collect Pond - downtown, directly behind City Hall). The water was stored in a new reservoir at Chambers Street and was distributed through wooden pipes. The Manhattan Company used surplus funds to start a bank known today as Chase Manhattan. The company, more interested in running a bank than a water supply system, did a poor job of delivering water to the city. From the Joel Levin Collection.

Condition: Even toning. Two cancellation punches with ink cancellation at center, unaffecting signature. Irregularly cut. Minor pinhole of paper loss at center of check. Pencil notation on verso. Two minor areas of sticker residue to verso of case.
