Description

[Revolutionary War]. Hugh Hughes Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 6.25" x 8.25", F. kill [Fishkill, New York]; March 10, 1782. Colonel Hugh Hughes (1727-1802) was a New York Sons of Liberty leader and served as a Deputy Quartermaster of the Continental Army. He writes to John Fisher, an Assistant Deputy Quartermaster at Fishkill Landing, to discuss where to acquire wood for the building of a spy boat. It reads in part:

"If Capt. Gray applies to you for material to complete a Spy Boat, you will furnish all such articles as he shall say in writing are wanted for her completion..." Signed, "H Hughes."

Before he was appointed Deputy Quartermaster by George Washington, Hughes served as a commissary of Continental stores for New York. He remains one of the lesser-known Sons of Liberty despite his role as an informant and his correspondence with Samuel Adams. Hughes struggled financially before and after the war, and it is speculated that his clandestine participation may have been to avoid attracting the attention of his creditors.

Condition: Lightly foxed and soiled. Small chip to upper corner of address leaf, presumably from seal removal.
