Description

[Republic of Texas]. Nathaniel Townsend Document Signed "Nathl. Townsend" as Consul for the Republic of Texas in New Orleans. One partly-printed page, 7.75" x 9.75", New Orleans, March 16, 1838. Townsend certifies that "John P. Mills appeared before me and acknowledged the annexed Power of Attorney to be his voluntary act and deed for the purposes therein named." With a blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner of the "New Orleans Consulate of the Republic of Texas." President Sam Houston named Townsend (1804-1864) consul at New Orleans in April 1837, a position he served in until September 1838. This document is age toned with smoothed folds and minor stains.
