Description

[Napoleon Bonaparte]. Documents Signed by Hugues Bernard Maret, Louis Alexandre Berthier, Jean François Carteaux, and Henri Clarke, Duc de Feltre. Includes:

Henri Clarke, Duc de Feltre, Document Signed. One page on Minister of War letterhead, 7.25" x 12", Paris; October 14, 1812. Writing to General Count Caffarelli, Clarke reports recent movements by General Jean Nicolas Louis Abbé in Navarre and the joint movements in Tabara from Generals Anne-François-Charles Treillard and Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult. Signed, "Duc de Feltre."

In 1807, French forces invaded and occupied Spain and Portugal. Napoleon forced Spanish King Charles IV and his son, Ferdinand VII, and installed a puppet monarchy under the rule of his brother, Joseph Bonaparte. However, most regions in Spain revolted against the French occupation and created a government-in-exile in Cádiz. In 1812, allied Spanish and British forces launched a campaign against Napoleon's forces, succeeding in pushing back the imperial army. In the fall of 1812, the French launched several counterattacks, referenced here by Clarke.

Jean François Carteaux Endorsement Signed. Two pages on Army of the Interior letterhead, 7" x 7.75", no place; [1798]. Untranslated letter in French, signed, "Carteaux."

Minister of State during Napoleon's infamous Hundred Days, Maret held a number of positions throughout the emperor's tenure. He was also a confidential advisor to Bonaparte as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Louis Alexandre Berthier Letter Signed. One page on Army of the Alps letterhead, 7" x 8.75", no place; [1794]. Untranslated letter in French, signed, "Berthier." One of Napoleon's Marshals of France, Berthier held several positions under the emperor's command. He served twice as Minister of War as well as chief of staff to Bonaparte.
