Description
[American Revolution]. Muster Roll of Captain Stephen Sewall's Company, 1777. Two pages on one leaf, 12.25" x 8", Cambridge, Massachusetts; August 9, 1777. Manuscript muster roll for Captain Stephen Sewall's company in the regiment commanded by Colonel William R. Lee "in the Service of the United States". It records the names, ranks, and commission dates of the company's four officers and the names and ranks of fourteen noncommissioned officers and enlisted men. The verso contains a table titled "Proof of the Effectives" which lists that fifteen men were present and operative. The recto is signed by Major Andrew Brown as deputy muster master. The verso is signed in attestation by Lieutenant John Brown.Col. William R. Lee's regiment was authorized in late 1776 and raised at Cambridge in the summer of 1777. Andrew Brown (circa 1745-1797) was an Irish-born journalist from Massachusetts. During the Revolution, he is believed to have participated in the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill, and was appointed muster major general in 1777. Brown founded the pro-federalist newspaper Federal Gazette in 1788 (changed to Philadelphia Gazette in 1793); however, he lost the favor of the federalists in 1791 after his paper was accused of showing partiality to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. On January 27, 1797, Brown's home caught fire, killing his wife and three children. Brown himself was grievously injured while attempting to rescue his family, and succumbed to his wounds on February 4, 1797.
Condition: Light scattered foxing. Smoothed folds.
