Description

[American Revolution]. Group of Five Revolutionary War-Era Documents. Including a soldier's bond, several pay and provision orders, and a clipped signature.

Abel Pettibone Soldier's Bond Signed ("Abel Pettibone"). One partially printed page, 12" x 7.5", Connecticut; March 22, 1777. This document issued to Abel Pettibone and Jonah Gillet records their bond to the State of Connecticut on behalf of the Pay-Table Committee. Pettibone is commissioned as captain of "...a Company of Militia detach-d to serve in the State of Rhode Island till the first day of May next..." with Gillet as his co-bondsman. Signed by Pettibone and Gillett, countersigned by Lt. Charles Hopkins and Ezekiel Williams (Commissary of Prisoners of Connecticut) as witnesses. Docketed.

George Mathews Clipped Signature ("Geo Mathews"). One clipped signature, 3.25" x 6.5", no place; no date. Mathews served a distinguished military career in the American Revolution, participating in the battles of Point Pleasant, Brandywine, and Germantown, the latter in which he was wounded and captured. He remained a prisoner of war until his exchange in late 1781. After his military duty was concluded, he established a career in politics. He served as 3rd Governor of Georgia and a member of the First Congress among a number of other state and federal legislative positions. His later career was somewhat marred by his involvement in land speculation activities, including committing his signature to the Yazoo Act (later referred to as the Yazoo Land Fraud) and a somewhat poorly strategized insurrection to capture the Spanish territory of East Florida, ultimately denounced by the federal government.

Jonathan Laurence Autograph Document Signed ("Jonathan Laurence"). One page, 3" x 8", Albany [New York]; February 17, 1782. A brief note stating, in part: "Please to deliver the bearer 1 Cask of Wine and three Barrels of Whiskey." Docketed and with a later note acknowledging receipt of items, signed by Jacobus Van Schoonhoven, a colonel of the 12th Albany County Militia.

Noah Phelps Provision Order Signed ("Noah Phelps"). One page, 13.5" x 8.25", no place; March 13, 1777. A manuscript document listing two columns of merchants and provisions purchased by Colonel Noah Phelps and Jonathan Humphrey. Signed by Phelps and Humphrey on the verso, acknowledging receipt of payment. Phelps is perhaps best remembered for his leadership in the successful capture of Fort Ticonderoga, going so far as to have entered the Fort in disguise ahead of the action to secure valuable information that ensured a bloodless victory.

Oliver Ellsworth Pay Order Signed ("O. Ellsworth"). One page, 6.25" x 6.75", Hartford [Connecticut]; December 31, 1776. An autograph document addressed to John Lawrence, Treasurer, ordering payment to be issued to Samuel Osborn "...to enlist a Company in the 4-Battalions now raising-." Docketed and with acknowledgment of receipt signed by Samuel Osborn and a later auditor's note signed "E. Plummer" and dated September 1, 1777. Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) was chosen as a delegate to the first and second Continental Congress, a variety of state and federal committees and courts, and the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he played an important role in the adoption of the Connecticut Compromise. After the war, he was among some of the earliest U.S. senators and was eventually nominated by President George Washington as Chief Justice of the United States on the newly established Supreme Court.

Condition: Uneven edges; minor chipping to edges. Light scattered foxing and soiling. Creased along old folds. 1777 Abel Pettibone document partially split along horizontal folds and with two narrow vertical splits to the center of the document affecting text and wax seals chipped. Mathews clipped signature with six small puncture marks along the central fold, not affecting the signature. 1777 Noah Phelps document chiefly split along folds, paper loss to the lower left corner not affecting text, and some offsetting.
