Description

[Harper's] Original Civil War Sketches: Tybee Lighthouse and More. Group of four ink and watercolor sketches, done by artists in-the-field, likely for publication in Harper's Weekly. 1) 8.75" x 6.75" sketch signed "Oston", inscribed on verso "See Herald letter dated Oct. 14 1861 Fortress Monroe Va. B. Joston. Prison at Richmond". Loss to top left corner. 2) 10" x 3" sketch of unspecified location possibly, per crossed-out notation on verso, "Rebel Fortifications on Munson hill". 3) 9.75." x 6.75" sketch showing the "Baptist Church Falls Church [VA]". The verso is inscribed: "Falls Church Va. Advanced post of the 'Grand Army' head [sic] by the second Maine reg. Col. Jameson". 4) Matted 9" x 5.5" sketch titled "Tybee Lighthouse". The verso has three manuscript paragraphs written by the sketch artist and war correspondent himself. He describes the lighthouse "at the entrance of the Harbor of Savannah", how it formerly was used as a barracks by the Savannah Blues prior to being occupied by Union forces. "The rebels deserted this place taking with them all their artillery in possession of this island. Ft. Pulaski may be shelled & taken during a reconnaissance today by Gen. Sherman and others."
