Civil War-Era Codman & Shurtleff Field Amputation Kit.

Housed in lacquered hard-wood case measuring approximately 16 x 4 1/2 x 3-inches, lined in red velvet with fitted compartments for the amputation saw, bone nipper, tweezers, tourniquet and various scalpels and Liston knives. The instruments are marked with various maker marks including Tiemann and others. The inside lid of the case has the "Codman & Shurtleff/ Surgical &/ Dental Instruments / 13 Tremont St. / Boston" gilt on morocco label. The lid of the case has a brass ownership escutcheon, which in this case is blank.
