Description

1757 Black Powder Horn from the Ogden Family. The finely engraved intricate details range from the filled sails of merchant ships to an ornate Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom to the map's winding rivers, numerous forts, and impressive depiction of New York. Engraved above Fort Stanwix is the text, "Capt/ Ogden/ Fort/ Ticonderoga/ 1757," framed in scrollwork. The horn is approximately 3.5" x17", with New York featured near the base and Lake Ontario near the raised ring. The base has a wire semi-circle loop at the bottom. Accompanying the powder horn is a copy of a signed letter from Per Terje Norheim, previous president of the Norwegian Arms and Armour Society. The letter confirms the "horn is original in all respects and compare[s] favourably [sic] with the best horns in Dresslar: The Engraved Powder Horn."

Fort Ticonderoga, formerly known as Fort Carillon, was built in northern New York, constructed between October 1755 and 1757 during the Seven Years' War by Michel Charier de Lotbinière. Located between the confluence of Lake George and Lake Champlain, the fort was in a strategic sweet spot for the competition between the British and French for trade routes, being between the Hudson River Valley and the Saint Lawrence River Valley. The engraved name "Capt Ogden" most likely refers to Captain Jonathan Ogden-his military history including Lt. Captain Isaac Corso's Company as part of the New York Regiment, taking part in the Battle of Lake George, and serving as Captain of a company. He is also referred to in the journal of Captain Roger Roberts, the famed New Hampshire scout.

Condition: The base has wear and some abrasions affecting the darker finish. A few holes are scattered throughout the horn, including on the Royal Coat of Arms. Light scratching is present, and a chip is on the spout's top edge.
