Description

Late 19th-Century Horse Drawn Hook and Ladder Fire Wagon. Measuring 37" long x 10.5" tall x 9" wide, this antique wooden hook and ladder fire wagon has character to burn. The red hand-painted wooden frame with running boards rolls on four cast iron wagon wheels. The accessories on the fire wagon consist of five wooden ladders, three cast iron fireman's helmets, two cast iron hatchets, one pick axe and one fire extinguisher. The wheel wells and seats are composed of hand-painted tin. Lettering on each side of the fire wagon reads "H & L No. 4. N.F.D.". Presumably, this stands for "Hook and Ladder Number 4" from the "Newark Fire Department" or "Norfolk Fire Department" or some other city beginning with an "N". The wagon is in good working order, with usual wear throughout, as some child of the Gilded Age must surely have enjoyed playing with this toy. The paint on the wheel wells shows some chipping, a nut on the front right wheel is a replacement, and a rung on the largest ladder is broken at one end. Additionally, the rear steering wheel, toy firemen, and horses are missing from the piece, if they were ever present at all. Despite its flaws, though, this wonderful toy fire wagon is a lovely antique, reminiscent of a bygone era when toys were simple and a child's imagination took care of the rest.
