Description
Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835-1915). Acryllium Vulturina.An exotic hand-colored lithograph from Elliot's Monograph of the Phasianidae, or Family of the Pheasants (New York: 1870-1872). In excellent condition with the exception of slight toning to image area. Light penciled notations. 18 x 23 inches.
More Information: Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835-1915), a respected American ornithologist who travelled the world amassing a huge collection of bird specimens, was affiliated with several natural history institutions, including Chicago's Field Museum. As a man of independent wealth, no expense was spared in producing his lavish folio works, such as A Monograph of the Phasianidae, or Family of the Pheasants (1870-1872) and A Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise (1873). Elliot supplied the text and commissioned acclaimed bird artists Josef Wolf and Joseph Smit to render the rich and "poetical" illustrations.
