Painted Sarcophagus Panel
Egypt.
Ca. 1800-600 B.C.
11-5/8" x 8-1/4".
A multi-color painted wood plank depicting the God Anubis standing below a large balance scale, weighing the heart of the deceased. A female dog or wolf is seated in front of him and a female figure stands behind the dog. Two Eyes of Horus are above the scale. An additional God holds the hand of the deceased, leading him in the opposite direction. A glyph band above the scene. Upper register decorated with a row of stars, indicting the heavens. Some normal areas of paint loss, otherwise stable surface. A lovely fragment.
