Engraving Plate Painting
Germany or Northern Europe
15th to 17th century.
6-3/8"L. x 4-1/2"W.
Copper engraving plate with the Betrayal of Christ and a double portrait of a married couple painted in oil. The engraving plate is after the Betrayal of Christ by Martin Schongauer (c. 1448-1491); it has the initials S.N. at the bottom. The couple on the other side looks out at the viewer as they hold up a golden ring together, symbol of their marriage. The ruff collars on their costumes were worn in northern Europe between the mid-16th and the mid-17th centuries.
