Description
Benjamin Franklin: Pre-1850 Folk Art Tavern Sign. Polychrome painted wood two-sided, hanging trade sign, American, 19th-century. It depicts a stylized portrait of a thoughtful Benjamin Franklin holding a newspaper in an oval format, with painted lettering "FRANKLIN INN." and "J.H. WINGERT" above and below, applied molded frame, original wrought iron hardware, (imperfections), 62.5" x 34". The painted decoration on the reverse side is dark and worn. We have been unable to pinpoint the location of the Franklin Inn operated by Mr. Wingert, but the sign was found in Maine. A fine piece of Americana with a great deal of character and presence.Auction Info
