Description

Western Union: Early Circa 1871 Thomas Edison Stock Ticker Machine with Accessories. Although the stock ticker was invented in 1867 by Edward A. Calahan, the design was improved upon becoming a commercial success thanks to Thomas A. Edison. The stock ticker offered here is one of Edison's earliest versions of these working models called the Universal Stock Ticker manufactured in the early 1870s. It is actually marked "D&H Precision Tool Co., Newark, NJ" so it can be dated to 1871 thru 1874. The stock ticker is accompanied by the original glass dome that housed the ticker. Because the glass originally fit onto a wood stand (which is seldom found with this model ticker), a custom made modern replacement base is included so that the ticker can be displayed properly fitted under its original glass dome. There were only 5000 of these units made, thus this early version is exceedingly rare. Also included with the ticker are three accessory pieces. To find these 1870's vintage business machines in such complete shape is extraordinary. Highly prized as a collector's items they are great conversation pieces and real attention getters!

Condition: Stock ticker mechanism is stamped "6004" and marked "D&H Precision Tool Co., Newark, NJ". Heavy cast base with original black paint and gilt "WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH CO." cartouche logo. Wear and rubbing to surfaces and gilt lettering. Parts appear in fine condition with expected dust and dirt from exposure and storage. Accessories that accompany the stock ticker include: (1) The original glass dome or jar. (2) A custom made modern replacement wood base. (3) A Western Union Telegraph Main Line Sounder on its original wood base. (4) 3.5" x 3.5" x 2.5" tall steel box with enameled metal label inscribed, "Western Union Telegraph Co./Transmitter Weight Tool 1-A". (5) A probable telegraph-related part we cannot specifically identify. The stock ticker itself displays very well with a partial roll of original ticker tape intact visually completing its look and charm.
